Inca Trail 4 days / 3 nights

This is the name given to part of the vast network of trails built by the Incas that united the main administrative and religious centers of their empire, what they called the Tahuantinsuyo. One of these trails connects the city of Cusco with Machu Picchu. There are various trekking options offered, such as the eight day trip, requiring that the traveler be in peak physical condition. It features an ascent of the slopes of MountSalkantay. Yet, there is another one day trip,allowing you to fully appreciate the experience of journeying along the route without having to struggle on a seriously demanding trek. Its chief stopping point is the Wiñaywayna archeological site.

The most popular section is the four day trek. Because the trial cuts through incredibly beautiful landscape, due to several different ecological tiers, and passes by archeological sites built by the Incas, it has earned the reputation of being one of the world’s best trekking destinations. The trail crosses mountain passes that hover around altitudes of 4,000 meters, like Warmiwañusqa (4,200 m) and Runkuraqay (3,860 m), descends to 2,000 meters (eyebrow of the jungle), takes the trekker on rather long staircases cut in the mountain side, and passes through tunnels that reach 20 meters in length. This section begins at Piskacucho, at the 82nd kilometer of the Cusco – village of Machu Picchu railroad.

Our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco very early in the morning, to take bus to the city of Chilca to begin your trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. After approximately three hours walking you will stop for lunch. Then you will continue walking towards your first camp at Wayllabamba, on the way you will have a guided tour of the archaeological complex of Llactapata. Dinner and overnight in tents at the campsite.


After breakfast, the toughest part of the trail begin, walking towards the highest point in the Inca Trail where you will have an unbelievable panoramic view of the whole area and will observe different types of microclimates. After a 3 hours walk you will reach the first pass, named Warmiwañiusca or Dead Woman’s Pass, at approximately 4,200 m.a.s.l. Here, you will have a tremendous feeling of achievement mixed with relief on reaching the top. After lunch you will continue your walking down to Pacaymayo where you will camp and have dinner.


After breakfast start the descent towards the second most important pass of the trail at 3,850 m.a.s.l. having a guided visit at the archaeological complex of Runkurakay and the Inca citadel of Sayacmarca. Continue your trekking towards Puya Patamarka (Cloud-level town), another important archaeological monument, where lunch will be served. After a short break you will continue walking to Wiñay Huayna (Forever Young) for a guided visit of this impressive archaeological complex with a spectacular setting. Dinner and overnight at the camp.


After breakfast, have a very early start to arrive in time for sunrise at Machu Picchu.

After a one hour walk through the forest towards the Inti Punku or the Gate of the Sun, also known as the Entrance Gate to Machu Picchu, where you will have the most impressive panoramic view of the citadel. Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, three-hours guided tour around the citadel, visiting the main sites and monuments. After the tour you will have free time to wander around, and then you will meet with the rest of the group to drive by bus down to Aguas Calientes. In the afternoon, transfer by train to Cusco. Upon arrival in Cusco transfer to your hotel. End of services.

Use trainers along the walks.


The main problem a trekker might encounter is altitude sickness. The Inka Trail goes over 4000 m of altitude. Below you will find some elementary things to consider:

  • We recommend drinking coca- leave infusions (mate de coca) upon arriving to Cuzco. Every public place and hotel has some and even some hotels give it to customers for free.
  • Drink a lot of water during walks.
  • Eat light, low fat meals or food easy to digest.
  • During the Trek, walk quietly the first day, avoiding useless efforts.
  • If you smoke, try to slow down a little bit.
  • Do not hesitate to stop and get some rest if you feel the lack of oxygen.
  • Alert your guide if you feel sick.


Tap water in most of Peru is potable, but the chemical and bacteriological content varies from place to place. To avoid problems, we recommend you to always drink bottled water.


  • Personal toilet items.
  • Personal medications kit (plasters, bands, cotton, alcohol, aspirins, pills for stomachache, medicine to avoid altitude sickness, contact lenses cleaner, etc.).
  • Camera.
  • Boots, tennis shoes or walking shoes with no heels.
  • Sleeping bag (only for the 4-day Trek).
  • Walking stick with rounded and rubber end.
  • A hat or cap.
  • Long-sleeved shirts.
  • A bottle of water and some purifying pills.

  • Dried fruit, candies and chocolates.
  • Woollen gloves, scarves and socks.
  • Rain wear for the rainy season.
  • Lanterns, batteries and bulbs.
  • Long pants or slacks.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Sun screen Lotion.

  • Sweaters and a jacket.
  • A backpack (50-70 liters) for the walks.
  • Towel and toilet paper.

  • Some local currency for the hot shower at the last campsite.
