Salkantay Trek 5 Days / 4 Nights

ITINERARY

DAY 1: CUSCO – TRAIL (MOLLEPATA – CRUZ PATA – SORAYPAMPA)

Around 5:00, departure from Cusco to Mollepata village where we will arrive around 9:00 and have breakfast. We will then load horses with our equipment to begin the Trek to Cruz Pata where we will arrive at 12:00 and have lunch. Later, we will continue walking to Soraypampa at 12631 ft (3850 m) where we will arrive at 17:30.Dinner and first campsite. Included: lunch, dinner

DAY 2: TRAIL (SORAYPAMPA – SALCANTAY – HUAYRAC PAMPA – CHAULLAY)

Around 7:00, after breakfast, we will begin the most difficult part of the Trek, walking through the site known as Pampa Salcantay. We will then take the left side of the glacier Umantay located beside the glacier Salcantay. Around noon, we will be at the highest point, Salcantay Umantay at 14763 ft (4500 m). We were watch the Salcantay glaciers and after an hour of rest we will have lunch in the area called Huayrac Pampa. We will then continue walking down for 4 hours to Chaullay located at 9514 ft (2900 m), where we will set the camp for the second night.

DAY 3: TRAIL (CHAULLAY – LA PLAYA – SANTA TERESA)

After breakfast, around 7:00, we will begin a 5-hour walk. On the way, we will go through the village called Collpabamba located in the rainforest area. We will see waterfalls and a wide variety of plants and flowers before arriving to the area called La Playa where we will have lunch. Later, we will walk for about 2 hours until we get to the camping area at Santa Teresa at 5413 ft (1650 m). You can go to the thermal baths and rest all the evening. DAY 4: TRAIL (SANTA TERESA) – HYDROELECTRIC CENTRAL – AGUAS CALIENTES

Around 8:00, we will begin a one hour walk to the “Oroya” (hanging cables system to cross the river). On the way we will see Machu Picchu far away for the first time. After crossing the river, we will walk for one more hour to get to the Hydroelectric Central where we will rest and have lunch. In the afternoon we are going to have free time. Included meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

In the morning, we will have a guided tour of the citadel of Machu Picchu (about 2 hours) visiting the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Solar Clock, the Royal Quarters, the temple of the Three Windows and the cemeteries.

Free time to stroll around the citadel or to visit for free the HaynaPicchu.

In the Night p.m train to Ollantaytambo, back bus from ollantaytambo to Cusco.

NOT INCLUDED IN THESE TREK:

  • Personal carrier horses (rent for US$ 90). Rucksack and other personal equipment will have to be carried by the passenger the 4th and 5th day.
  • Sleeping bag (rent for US$ 30).
  • Walking stick, Rucksack.
  • Bus from Aguas Calientes / Machupicchu /Aguas Calientes.
  • Drinks: sodas or bottled mineral water, Personal expenses and tips.
  • Entrances Fee to Huaynapicchu $15 American Dollars.
  • Entrances to Hot Springs
  • Cancellation and Travel Insurance.
  • Additional accomodations for bad weather.
  • Day 5: Last Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

GENERALITIES: Use trainers along the walks.

OPTIONAL:

  • You can climb to Huaynapicchu, but you have to book these entrances before the Salkantay Trek. Additional price $15.00 American Dollars.
  • Sleeping Bag, you can rent for $30.00 American Dollars.
  • Porter Service for carry your equipment $90.00 additional price.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Personal toilet items.
  • Personal medications kit (plasters, bands, cotton, alcohol, aspirins, pills for stomachache, medicine to avoid altitude sickness, contact lenses cleaner, etc.).
  • Boots, tennis shoes or walking shoes with no heels.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • Walking stick with rounded and rubber end.
  • A hat or cap.
  • Long-sleeved shirts.
  • A bottle of water and some purifying pills.
  • Knife.
  • Dried fruit, candies and chocolates.
  • Woollen gloves, scarves and socks.
  • Rain wear for the rainy season.
  • Lanterns, batteries and bulbs.
  • Long pants or slacks.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Sun screen Lotion.
  • Sun glasses, sweaters and a jacket.
  • A backpack (50-70 liters) for the walks, Towel and toilet paper.
  • Underware,T-shirts
  • Warm clothing (sweaters, anoraks or others).
  • Swimsuit, some local currency for the hot springs.
